The 20th anniversary of China’s accession to the World Trade Organization

Twenty years have passed since China formally joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. Over the past 20 years, China has contributed an average of nearly 30 percent to world economic growth annually. China is a major trading partner of more than 120 countries and regions and a strong magnet for global capital and an investment powerhouse. Through opening-up, China has shared development dividends with the rest of the world and achieved mutual benefit and win-win development.

WTO spokesman Keith Rockwell said that China is now an important promoter of plurilateral negotiations, actively participating in negotiations on joint declaration initiatives in various areas, and “playing a leading role in negotiations on investment facilitation”.

He said that China hosted the WTO Mini-Ministerial Meeting in Shanghai in 2019, which pushed plurilateral negotiations to a new height. In addition, China has taken the initiative in many other areas of plurilateral negotiations, such as e-commerce and development issues, and actively promoted WTO reform.

Despite the decline in global shipments due to the epidemic, China’s total foreign trade volume reached 32.16 trillion yuan last year, up 1.9 percent year on year. The Ministry of Commerce has said that China welcomes all countries to share development opportunities and is willing to work with all parties to jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system with the WTO as the core.
